Students’ Role and Participation in Institutional Decision Making

Approved March 4, 1997
Revised August 2, 1999

1.

Students provide input into the decision making process through the Student Government, University Strategic Planning and Budgeting Council, Student Fee Advisory Committee, and Chancellor's Student Advisory Board of The Texas A&M University System. Various advisory groups and committees, which include students, are formed to address specific issues. In addition, the University encourages those students not serving on these formal bodies to express their ideas and suggestions so that they may be considered in the making of policy decisions.

2.

Students are encouraged to become a part of the decision making process by participating in Student Government or making University personnel aware of their desire to serve on a committee or advisory board. The Student Government is composed of an elected student body president and vice president and elected senators. The Student Fee Advisory Committee is made up of nine members, five students appointed by the Student Government and four members appointed by the President to represent the entire institution. The Chancellor's Student Advisory Board of The Texas A&M University System has three representatives from this university: the student body president plus a member and an alternate appointed by the President of the University. Students may request to be appointed to serve on advisory groups and committees. Appointments to advisory groups and committees are made by various members of the university community.

3.

The student body president and vice president serve on the University Strategic Planning and Budgeting Council, which is composed of administrative officers, directors, and other members of the University community. The council is involved in ongoing planning, assessment of institutional effectiveness, and budget development for the University.

4.

In effect, the University operates under an open door policy with regard to student input in institutional decision making. However, to determine the specific office to which student input should be directed, students are encouraged to contact the Office of Student Affairs for assistance.
