It's What Counts
When Dr. Janet Tillinger arrived on campus in 1995, she was instantly drawn to the Island University’s “entrepreneurial spirit” and the leadership found in many to get things done. Ten years ago, the professor of accounting and former chair of the Department of Accounting and Business Law, proposed the idea to start an incubation center. In August 2009, the Coastal Bend Business Innovation Center, a vital link between the University’s research and knowledge base and the area economy, became a reality. Tillinger, who leads the Business Incubator’s Funding Development/Educational Development areas, works with clients to help them receive funding, and facilitates working relationships between clients and University professors, which opens doors for more grant opportunities. This summer, Tillinger was presented with the Innovation Center’s “Faculty of the Year” award.  In the last year, Tillinger assisted in the submission of more than $1 million in grants and $695,000 in private funds for Innovation Center clients. Tillinger also nurtured the Professional Program in Accounting, which has resulted in a marked increase in graduate enrollment in accounting.  At every opportunity, Tillinger speaks excitedly of the great things happening on campus. In 2008, Tillinger was honored with the “Amigos de la Isla” Award for encouraging accounting students to sign up with Career Services for employment opportunities. She is also a past recipient of the Alumni Association’s Distinguished Faculty Achievement Award for positively impacting students, advancing the University’s mission, her role as a campus leader and serving in the community. She has led numerous committees and University assignments and has presented at many academic conferences and workshops. Tillinger, a member of the American Accounting Association and the American Taxation Association, says she appreciates that the University takes the time to honor faculty and staff for their hard work. In her photo, Tillinger holds an original copy of the first U.S. income tax form from 1913.
