An Outstanding Islander

Born to Run
When Ari Perez trains for a race, it's common for this junior to run between 55 and 85 miles per week. To maintain his high-level energy, the track and field/cross country superstar consumes four meals a day and snacks. The distance runner, who has earned the Islander Athletic Director's Honor Roll, was recently named Islanders Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year. He was in second grade when he ran his first Beach to Bay Relay Marathon with his family. The management major is a 2006 graduate of King High School where, as a senior, he was named Caller-Times All-South Central Texas Runner of the Year. While in high school, Perez attended the Cross Country Camp at the Island University for two consecutive years and was recruited by Coach Shawn Flanagan. Although Perez considered attending other universities, he felt most welcomed as an Islander and was drawn to the tropical atmosphere of the campus. He says being in Corpus Christi has afforded him opportunities to network with friends and family and stay motivated. Recently, Perez was selected to the Capitol One Bank/Southland Conference All-Academic teams and earned All-SLC honors in the steeplechase after placing third. When he isn't running, he enjoys playing disc golf. One day, he hopes to manage his own small business, a running shoe store. His older brother, Adriel, a business major, also attends the Island University.
