Gearing Up for Greatness
Playing school with the neighborhood kids helped Amy Koenning realize her dream of becoming an educator. Before the GEAR UP/STAR Pre-College Outreach Center implementation director came to the Island University in 2007, she touched the lives of thousands of children through her 37 years experience as an elementary and secondary teacher and principal in Alice. Koenning has also been named Alice ISD Teacher of the Year. Currently, Koenning works with six STAR school districts to prepare students for college through real-life experiences and informs them and their parents of post secondary opportunities. Her ultimate goal is to assist children from low socio-economic/rural districts transition into college, make appropriate choices about their future, lead them to academic success and show parents how to be supportive. Koenning, a former Alice Chamber of Commerce president, belongs to the Texas Association of Secondary Principals and the Texas State Teachers Association. The GEAR UP/STAR (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness in Undergraduate Programs/ Students Training for Academic Readiness) program is a federally-funded, six-year project awarded through the Texas Education Agency. The connection between Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and the districts' middle and high school staff and students is enhanced through a Faculty Fellows and University Student Ambassador program. Areas of academic emphasis are math, science, English/language arts and Spanish.
