We Are the Champions

Alumna Melerie DeLeon realized her passion in sports and entertainment early on when she was a cheerleader at Dilley High School in Dilley, Texas. While she was a student at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, an internship opportunity with Islander Athletics helped prepared her for a Summer Grassroots Internship with Spurs Sports and Entertainment, which allowed her to be part of the 2013 NBA Playoffs and NBA Finals. That internship has now opened the door to an even more exciting career.

“Spurs Basketball is a well-known team in the National Basketball Association and is extremely loved by San Antonio residents and fans all over the world,” said DeLeon. “I have been blessed to be part of an organization that has made so much NBA History and are now the 2014 NBA champions of the world!”

DeLeon received her Bachelor of Science with an emphasis in Sports Management with a minor in Marketing in May 2014.  She worked with Islander Athletics throughout her entire undergraduate career and learned the marketing aspects of game day production, sponsorship fulfillment, and athletic ticketing. Her senior year, she was promoted to Islanders Marketing Assistant.

“I really appreciate everyone who helped me during my undergraduate years,” said DeLeon. “The individuals at Islanders Athletics became family to me. They taught me how demanding the sports industry is on your time, but also how to see its worth.”

After DeLeon’s summer internship with the Spurs ended, she was offered a Marketing Associate position in January 2014.

DeLeon and her family have always been big fans of the San Antonio Spurs, and she was beyond excited to return and experience what the organization had to offer.

As a Marketing Associate, DeLeon leads all marketing aspects from radio and TV to online, and print. She also schedules special appearances around San Antonio to give away free merchandise to fans. She has also led projects like Spurs U, which offers discounted tickets to college students, and the Spurs Caravan Tour, where the organization teams up with the Silver Dancers to bring the Spurs Experience to fans who cannot attend games in San Antonio.

One of the best aspects of her job was taking part in a number of exciting events from the River Championship Parade to the Alamodome Championship Pep Rally.

“The championship experience was phenomenal,” said DeLeon. “The whole week following the championship win was amazing and I have truly been blessed to be a part of an NBA championship experience.”
