Raising Cultural Awareness

International student Onur Guler is increasing awareness of Turkish culture through his activity on campus and in the community.

The international student from Izmir, Turkey, enrolled at the Island University in fall 2008 to earn a bachelor’s degree in General Business. Guler has given numerous presentations for the Study Abroad Program (Istanbul) and has also visited Cullen Middle School as part of the University’s Ambassador’s Suitcase program, which educates South Texas middle and high school students about other cultures.

“I am grateful to have had the opportunity to explain Turkish culture, history, and language to give people a more accurate image of my country,” said Guler, former president and vice president of the Turkish Student Association (TSA). “I enjoy discussing topics viewed from multiple perspectives and presenting them in unique ways that engage my audience. That is why Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s multi-cultural focus fits my personal educational approach.”

Guler is recipient of numerous scholarships including the Corpus Christi Estate Planning Scholarship, the Mervat M. Abdelsamad Memorial Endowed Scholarship, and the Community Outreach Scholarship. He has worked for Central Receiving and participated in the Together Islanders Develop Excellence (TIDE) student organization, which links freshmen with student mentors and connects them to University resources. In addition, he was involved with the Parade of Nations showcase and International Education Week.

As part of his commitment to cultural awareness, Guler created a soccer tournament on campus through the TSA. The first Texas A&M-Corpus Christi World Cup Soccer Tournament was played in fall 2010, with more than 100 international student participants representing countries from all over the world.

“Outside the campus, people may not be aware of the diversity at our University,” said Guler. “For me, meeting new people from all over the world is one of the most exciting parts about being an Islander.”
