Refreshing the Freshmen
As director of the First-Year Islanders (FYI) quality enhancement program, Dr. Susan Wolff Murphy aspires to make the first year experience even more exciting by providing students with social, academic, supportive and challenging opportunities. The associate professor of English has served on planning committees for the inaugural FYI Convocation to celebrate the official beginning of the students’ entry into the Islander community, and for the FYI Bridge one-day workshop designed to supply students with the tools they need to become successful in college. Both events were held in August. Currently, there are more than 1550 diverse freshmen at the Island University. In addition to ensuring that first-year students have a smooth transition from high school to college, she engages faculty in professional development that emphasizes student learning and college readiness. The Palo Alto, Calif., native arrived on campus in 2001 and is the First-Year Writing Program coordinator, responsible for hiring, training and supervising all graduate adjuncts and instructors who teach English 1301 and 1302. She is also the former co-director for the Island University’s Core Curriculum Programs. Wolff Murphy wants to ensure that students understand the benefits of developing strong reading and writing skills, which may lead them to become more active citizens able to navigate the rhetoric that surrounds us. Prior to teaching at the Island University, Wolff Murphy taught at Texas A&M University in College Station.  She has published numerous articles and book chapters as a result of her participation in the American Democracy Project, has presented at many conferences and workshops and has been involved with a National Science Foundation grant aimed at student success and retention of first-year science students.  She has also received the 2008-2009 College of Liberal Arts Award for Excellence in Service.
