Programmed to Multitask
Once Rafael Hernandez graduates in December with his Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and minor in Spanish, he will exude confidence, experience and marketability when interviewing for the perfect job. The Beeville native recently finished his third consecutive summer internship with Dell Inc. in Round Rock where he assisted as a project manager on the SOA infrastructures team and participated in Web service migration projects. His area of interest is working on computer networks for the government. Hernandez represented Texas A&M-Corpus Christi as an undergraduate student panelist at the 2009 Computing Alliance for Hispanic-Serving Institutions (CAHSI) conference held at Google Corporate Headquarters in Mountain View, Calif. Last fall he was also selected as the student to speak at the annual Corpus Christi CEO Breakfast with Dr. Harvey Knull, who recently retired after 10 years as associate vice president for Research and Scholarly Activity and dean of Graduate Studies. Hernandez, a former vehicle operator and dispatcher with the United States Air Force, was a member of a Protective Service Detail at the U.S. Embassy in Iraq before starting classes at the Island University in fall 2007. He also spent five years growing up in Salamanca, Guanajuato, Mexico, sharpening his bilingual skills in Spanish. As a peer leader/mentor under professor Phyllis Tedford, he has helped students understand computer science concepts and assisted them with test reviews and homework assignments. During Island Day events, he talks to prospective students and answers questions about the University’s Computer Science Program. Hernandez, a former chess champion, is also a member of the Computer Science Club, the Cyber Defense Club and the INROADS program to develop and place talented minority youth in business and industry and prepare them for corporate and community leadership.
