Sport Science Pioneer
Dr. Frank Spaniol and his colleagues are pioneers of sport science research. A professor in the Department of Kinesiology, he and his team investigate the effect of visual skills on the batting performance of professional baseball players utilizing the Vizual Edge® commercial software program. Spaniol, who has worked with the Houston Astros, Cincinnati Reds and the Milwaukee Brewers professional baseball teams, analyzes athletic performance through a battery of tests, and based on those results, prescribes strength and conditioning regimens to improve game performance. The former collegiate baseball player went on to become a head baseball coach of a highly competitive NCAA Division I baseball program and instructor of Health, Physical Education and Recreation at Morehead State University. Arriving here in 2004 from Georgia Southwestern State University, Spaniol spoke this summer at the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) Advanced Training Symposium in Shanghai, China. While there, and representing the NSCA as the chair of the Baseball Special Interest Group, he worked with the Chinese National Baseball Team. Spaniol has delivered numerous presentations at annual association meetings, had dozens of articles published in national and international journals and has been awarded more than 20 grants for exercise science and instructional technology research. He is a research consultant for data analysis and research design for the Visual Fitness Institute and serves on the Dartfish® Sport and Exercise Science Advisory Board. Due to his expansive experience and national and international recognition as a sport performance researcher in July 2009, Spaniol was honored as a National Strength and Conditioning Association Research Fellow.
