Listening to Her Inner Voice
For inspiration, alumnus Katherine Murch turns to a famous quote by Mahatma Gandhi. You must be the change you wish to see in the world. The summer 2009 graduate, who was born deaf, graduated magna cum laude, earning dual degrees in business management and marketing. Murch is a 2004 graduate of Flour Bluff High School, where she strongly advocated for students with disabilities. Murch held the title of Miss Deaf Texas 2007-2009 and was first runner up for Miss Deaf America 2008-2010. During her reign as Miss Deaf Texas, she gave speeches on improving education for deaf and hard-of-hearing children. Her post-graduation plans are to become a motivational speaker and start a non-profit organization aimed at making the world a better place. While attending the Island University, Murch was in the International Honor Society Beta Gamma Sigma and the Golden Key International Honour Society. During the summer, she assisted her mother, Lesa Thomas, also a graduate of the University, with coordinating the Aspen Camp of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. And this month, Murch moved to Aspen, Colo., to work as a public relations intern for the camp. Books that have changed her life include "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens" by Stephen Covey, "A Woman's Guide to the Language of Success" by Phyllis Mindell, Ed.D, and "The Tipping Point" by Malcolm Gladwell. In her free time Murch enjoys working out, photography and music by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Green Day and Madonna in which she can feel the beat. Murch is currently learning how to play golf.
