Rhythm and Routines
Islander Dance Team Captain Chelsea Childress enjoys performing hip-hop and jazz routines before audiences at the American Bank Center. The Quinlan, Texas, native and senior health science major is a former Tyler Junior College Apache Belle and lieutenant of her high school dance teams. An important life lesson the Islander Dance Team has taught Childress is to never give up. In July, the Islander Dance Team earned enough points at the Universal Dance Association College Dance Camp held at Texas State University to qualify for a spot at the UDA College Cheer and Dance Nationals to be held at the Walt Disney World Resort on Jan. 15-18, 2010, in Orlando, Fla. The team, which has grown to 15 members, won several awards including first place in fight song, the superior performance trophy, and more than 35 individual awards to become one of the camp's top teams. Childress, who is on the Dean's List and maintains a 3.9 grade point average, is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society and a recipient of the Health Science Program's Community Outreach Scholarship. When she's not dancing at University-hosted events such as Islander Lights, Navidad de los Niños, and the Islander Revue, she works as a veterinarian technician caring for furry four-legged friends. In her spare time, she volunteers for several programs including the Texas Adopt-a-Beach Cleanup and Conquer the Coast Bike Ride. She considers herself fortunate to experience the beautiful scenery of the Island campus, the interior of the Performing Arts Center and being near the beach on a daily basis.
