Excellence in Education
When Dr. JoAnn Canales was asked by the U.S. Department of State to speak with Peruvian government and university officials to implement quality control and accreditation systems for higher education institutions in Peru, she graciously accepted. Canales, who met with Peru's National Assembly of University Rectors in June, is associate dean of Graduate Studies and professor in the Department of Teacher Education. In 1998, she arrived from the University of Colorado at Denver. During her 11 years at the Island University, she has been impressed with the collegiality across campus. Canales brings with her 24 years teaching experience and more than 20 years of collaborative work with school districts, regional entities, state departments, state and national organizations, and international institutions of higher education. She was a co-principal investigator with colleagues in universities in Canada, the U.S., and Mexico on a tri-lateral grant to develop a doctoral program in International Education in Mexico; an evaluator examining educational needs in Trinidad and Tobago; and a presenter at international conferences in Mexico. Her expert areas are English language proficiency assessment, teacher preparation, and issues of access and success in higher education. Canales is the recipient of the University's Excellence in Teaching Award for 2005-2006 and was awarded an American Council of Education Fellowship in 2002-2003 which included an internship at Pace University in New York City. Recently, Canales started the Si Se Puede Scholarship in honor of her parents, awarding $1,000 to deserving students from her hometown of Laredo, Texas, who choose to attend Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
