Championing Success
From the moment Liza Mucheru-Wisner arrived at the Island University, she says she was surrounded by innovative minds. The Nairobi, Kenya, native and former Kenyan National Women’s Golf Team member played on the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Golf Team (1999-2003). But it was while attending school where she gained valuable experience and the building blocks for success. During her student years, Mucheru-Wisner, now associate director of the ELITE graduate student retention program, worked in Student Activities, where she helped plan events and started the Islander Cultural Alliance. As a computer science student recruiter, she interested at-risk youths in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) fields. As a fitness instructor, she taught world dance classes and showed her school spirit as Izzy the Islander mascot. She was on the Chancellor’s Student Advisory Board, chaired the Student Fee Advisory Committee, held the Student Government Association senior senator position, founded the Graduate Student Association and was an Middle Eastern Dance Club instructor. In 2004, Mucheru-Wisner earned a B.S. in Computer Science followed by a M.S. in Educational Technology. Through the ELITE Graduate Program, she finds cutting-edge ways to help graduate students succeed through new methods like the iPad usability study and the ELITE Academic Thermometer. She has seized on-campus opportunities as a Computing Sciences program coordinator and a Graduate Studies system support specialist. Her passion for children and technology led her to start the Texas Techies pilot program to prepare kids for educational readiness through technology-rich learning environments. She received the University’s 2010 Employee Excellence Award and the Corpus Christi Black Chamber of Commerce’s 2009 Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award. Mucheru-Wisner, who speaks on graduate student programs and other topics, is a Coastal Bend Court Appointed Special Advocates partner and a Magna Cum Laude National Scholars Honor Society member. This fall, Mucheru-Wisner is a contestant on NBC’s “The Apprentice” Season 10 with Donald Trump. She is married to University alumnus Denis Wisner (‘05 B.A. History).
