Strategic Management
Dr. Karen Middleton recently spent six months in Taipei, Taiwan, as a 2009-2010 Fulbright Scholar at Yuan Ze University where she taught strategic management to undergraduate and MBA students. In addition, the professor of management, who specializes in the effects of diversity on organizational behavior, presented a six-series lecture to MBA students, traveled to Hong Kong and Macau as a senior researcher and was listed on the National Science Council of Taiwan Researchers’ Database. Middleton, who has also taught in Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, England and China, is in her 11th year at the Island University and enjoys her free rein to engage in multidisciplinary research with her colleagues. As coordinator of Leadership Service Learning Projects (LSLP) since 2003, she has overseen the Leadership and Managerial Effectiveness Class projects where students have worked with Naval Air Station-Corpus Christi to ship “Christmas in November” boxes to those serving our country in Iraq and Afghanistan, and “Returning Heroes” baskets to give to military personnel when they return home. Other activities include working closely with the Rockport Piecemakers by the Bay Quilt Guild and the Patriot Guard to present red, white and blue quilts to returning military personnel; assisting with landscaping for the Rockport for Veterans Project; and remodeling senior and recreation centers for the Corpus Christi Parks and Recreation District. In all, the LSLP have generated around $150,000 in cash and gifts in kind. Her service to the University includes her participation on the College of Business’ Graduate Advisory Committee, the University Outreach Council, the University Academic Standards Grievance Committee and the Faculty Hearing Committee/Advisory Committee Pool. She has served as chair of the Institutional Review Board and on the SACS Study Subcommittee and the University’s Internationalization Committee. In 2011, Middleton will serve as the international track chair for the Southwest Academy of Management. Middleton has been published in numerous refereed journals and has presented at conferences across the nation, Canada, Mexico and Korea.
