Beyond Act I
For the last four years Kelly Russell's "Camp on the Coast" summer theatre workshop has attracted aspiring actors from across Texas and other states to the University campus. Around 100 high school students perform in one-act plays and receive instruction from University faculty and the finest high school theatre teachers in Texas during the two-week camp. The assistant professor of theatre, who is president-elect of the Texas Educational Theatre Association (TETA), will become the organization's president in January 2009. Russell is a frequent workshop presenter for TETA and Texas Speech Communication Association conventions. Last spring his production of "Anima Mundi" won the Directors' Choice Award for outstanding play at the Region VI American College Theatre Festival. Prior to arriving at the University in 2004, he taught theatre arts and speech communication in various Texas high schools and coached seven state champions and two national finalists.
