Sophomore Hitter Digs Top Grades
Islander volleyball player Beth Fionda attributes athletic and academic success to keeping organized. The sophomore opposite hitter carries a planner everywhere she goes. Beth recently was named to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Team for District VI of the University Division as a third-team selection. She has started 20 of the 33 matches she has played in during her career. And she had a career-high 14 kills with a .367 hitting percentage in a recent match against Florida Atlantic. Beth, who admires Olympic gold medalists Kerri Walsh and Misty May-Treanor, describes herself as "competitive." She says she's fortunate her family in Austin can travel to all her home games in Corpus Christi to cheer for the team. In the classroom, she maintains a 4.0 grade point average in interdisciplinary studies. Beth plans to graduate in 2011 and wants to teach second grade. This avid scuba diver is grateful for her supportive friends on the team and living near the beach!
