A Better Community

Alumnus John Valls strongly believes that giving back to the community should be everyone’s responsibility.

When Valls isn’t handling public affairs, public administration and business development for clients as owner of Valls Consulting Group, he is serving his community. The board chairman for the Corpus Christi Regional Transit Authority is also active on boards for the Corpus Christi Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and Corpus Christi City Employees Credit Union. A graduate of Leadership Corpus Christi Class 28, he also chaired Class 33 and has served on several steering committees. In 2008, he was named the Leadership Corpus Christi Alumni of the Year.

“My goal is to enact good public policy and to help raise funds for organizations,” said Valls, who received his MBA from the Island University in 1995. “Everyone should take part in volunteer service. It is my social responsibility to help make our community a better place.”

Valls has served on the RTA for more than six years. The main projects he leads are the conversion of the entire fleet of buses from diesel to compressed natural gas, establishing a ferry service between Corpus Christi and Port Aransas marina, and adding covered roofs to high traffic bus stops benches for waiting bus riders. He has also donated time to the Corpus Christi Convention and Visitors Bureau and the American Red Cross-Coastal Bend Chapter.

For those considering volunteerism, he suggests serving on no more than three boards at any one time.

“Serving on many boards will dilute your effectiveness,” he said. “My philosophy is to serve on boards that meet the following goals of personal, community, and professional enrichment.”

After working in Austin in the early 2000s, Valls returned to Corpus Christi to oversee business development/marketing for the Corpus Christi International Airport. Prior to launching his consulting group, he was marketing manager for the Port of Corpus Christi. He was also an adjunct professor of marketing and management at Del Mar College, the University of the Incarnate Word and Park University-NAS.
