Serving Our Alumni
As president of the National Alumni Association, Dr. Alma Garcia’s focus is on getting more alumni involved with their alma mater. Garcia, who was elected the association’s president in February, has worked for the Corpus Christi Independent School District for more than 20 years. She has taught middle school, high school and worked as an instructional advisor. In her current position, Title III program specialist, she conducts training for teachers within the district on how to work with English language learners. Garcia is active with the Corpus Christi Area Alumni Club and has served on the National Alumni Association Board for three years. Her interest in the alumni organization started when she began assisting her father, O.B. Garcia, a 1954 graduate of the University of Corpus Christi and former National Alumni Association president, with his alumni engagements. The University has notably transformed since Dr. Alma Garcia first stepped foot on campus in 1987. Over the years, she has developed a penchant for supporting the University and building school spirit and camaraderie among alumni. Garcia, who raised three children as a single parent while attending school, earned her Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education in 1990, a Master of Science in Occupational Training and Development in 1996 and a Doctorate of Educational Leadership in 2007. She has presented at several TESOL conferences aimed at assisting English language learners to succeed academically. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family and is a devoted volunteer of the Rise School of Corpus Christi, where her granddaughter attends.
