The Write Way

Alumnus Chelsea Mikulencak has taken her passion for writing to new heights. Mikulencak, a Composition and Seminar Instructor for the First-Year Learning Communities Program and a previous CASA Writing Center consultant, is looking for ways to improve the Island University’s developmental writing program. She will serve on a developmental writing panel on behalf of the First-Year Writing Program during the Conference on College Composition and Communication March 13-16 in Las Vegas, Nev.

“I look forward to working with other writing program directors and instructors to find the most successful, meaningful, and efficient ways to assess and implement changes within the University’s developmental writing programs, where the need for these elements are ever-increasing,” said Mikulencak.

The University’s writing program currently assists more than 100 students. During the conference, an evaluative assessment will be made based on the University’s developmental writing program, which adopted new standards in 2004.

Mikulencak, who is dedicated to helping students improve their linguistic skills, graduated from the Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi with a Master of Arts in English with a concentration in Rhetoric and Composition and Borderland Studies last summer. She maintained a 4.0 grade point average, held positions on various councils and associations dedicated to advancing students, and was recognized for her writing skills. The struggles she faced during her first year of college have allowed her to understand the students and their hardships.

“I feel strongly that our program helps set students up for long-term success as compared to simply helping them through one semester,” said Mikulencak. “More and more, students are faced with writing-intensive courses in college and must acquire and perfect a variety of writing skills for their current or future workplaces.”

Mikulencak’s experiences as a student, staff, and faculty, the Island University has given her an opportunity to advocate for students and shape young minds. Mikulencak recently applied to law school to pursue her calling to help society in a broader sense. She has been accepted to several schools including, St. Mary’s, Texas Tech and Loyola University Chicago.
