Pursuing Opportunities

University alumnus Rebecca Hill has always been one to step out of her comfort zone for a greater cause. A few years after completing a home schooling program in 2000, she pursued a once in a lifetime opportunity to train and serve as a Christian missionary in Indonesia. She spent three years living in Indonesia studying the language, culture, and seeking new ways to assist those in need.

“Most of what I did in Indonesia was learn, build relationships, and seek opportunities to help enable the people of Indonesia to have hope for the future,” said Hill. “After about a month, I could speak enough of their language to communicate out on the streets.”

Once arriving in the foreign land, Hill made friends with children, who happily became her first teachers. She communicated with them by drawing pictures in the dirt and they would tell her what she had drawn in their native tongue. By the time she left Indonesia, Hill was fluent in the native language.

Once returning to Corpus Christi, Hill graduated from a local community college with degrees in Mathematics Education and Kinesiology.

After being persuaded by Army ROTC recruiters to pursue a career in the U.S. Army, she joined the Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Islander Battalion in fall 2009.

“My greatest accomplishment was completing the ROTC Program, while maintaining a competitive GPA for Physical Therapy school,” she said. “I hope I also inspired, encouraged, and challenged many of my fellow Islanders to push their limits.”

Over the course of her training, Hill began to appreciate the 6 a.m. workouts as they helped keep her in tip-top shape during college. She also enjoyed the daily encouragement from the group of up-and-coming leaders.

During her time at the University, Hill’s focus of study was Kinesiology, Pre-Physical Therapy. She received awards for maintaining a 3.9 GPA, and for her excellent performance on the Army physical fitness test.

On Dec. 13, 2012, Hill was sworn into the United States Army and is currently seeking a graduate program to continue her studies in Physical Therapy.

“Each accomplishment has led me to a greater determination for success, and sometimes just helped give me a thicker skin,” she said.
