Studying Abroad
International Bolivian student Alfredo Villegas Suarez was inspired by his family to travel and learn many languages. After all, his two siblings studied abroad; his mother attended school in the United States; and his father earned degrees in England and Nigeria. After researching the Texas A&M University System, Villegas felt that Texas A&M-Corpus Christi was the best fit. Villegas fell in love with the sand and the sea, as he was far from the beach in Santa Cruz, Bolivia. The psychology major, who is minoring in human resources, was also drawn to the friendliness of people in South Texas. Through the University’s Honors Program, he has had access to smaller classes and the opportunity to get to know his professors. It didn’t take long for Villegas, who began his English as a Second Language International (ESLI) classes in Jan. 2009, to delve into University organizations across campus. Currently, he serves as vice president of the International Student Organization, where he helps plan and execute numerous activities including the “Parade of Nations.” He is a member of HACER (Hispanics for the Advancement of Community and Educational Readiness), and a college head for Liberal Arts in the Honors Program. His next projects are to launch the University’s first Bolivian Students Association and travel to Istanbul, Turkey, as part of the “Discover Istanbul” Study Abroad Program. Villegas speaks three languages (Spanish, English and Portuguese) and is taking French classes at the University. During his summer 2010 internship, Villegas was a translator who oversaw public relations for the Assist Card Insurance Company. He assisted travelers in Europe who visited the major European capitals including Madrid, Barcelona, Paris, Rome and Amsterdam. He has worked as a student assistant in the Mary and Jeff Bell Library, is a certified QPR Suicide Preventer through the Psychology Club and the Counseling Center and has received numerous scholarships including those from the University’s Honors Program.
