Where' the Money?
Joseph Ruiz can personally relate to the students who come into the Financial Assistance Office every day looking for sources of monies to help fund their education. It wasn’t long ago that Ruiz, who is now the University’s assistant director of Financial Assistance, walked in their shoes. The first-generation college student, who grew up in Kingsville, Texas, was the youngest of 11 children. Ruiz currently oversees the Financial Assistance customer service team and the outreach aspect of the office, which reaches out to major cities including San Antonio, Houston, Dallas and McAllen. He says he is living the ultimate dream of helping people from all walks of life launch their careers by finding the money they need for school, in the form of scholarships, grants and financial aid. Ruiz, who gives bilingual presentations on where to find money for school and the importance of getting an education, has also involved Texas A&M-Corpus Christi with the South Texas Financial Aid Fair and the Coastal Bend College Fair and other student recruitment. The University alumnus earned his master’s degree in educational administration from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and is earning a doctoral degree in educational leadership. Prior to his current position, Ruiz was a Financial Aid outreach advisor at the University. He has also worked as an educational advisor for LULAC National Education Service Center, a job development specialist at The Institute of Rural Development and a youth mentoring facilitator, case manager and an HIV/AIDS outreach educator. Ruiz, who is married with three children ages 3, 6 and 9, serves on the Our Lady of Good Counsel Church Development Committee as president of the St. Vincent de Paul Society in Kingsville.
