Get Healthy
Dr. Pamela Meyer strives to build a positive community interest in the area of Mexican-American health in the Coastal Bend. The professor of sociology, who specializes in medical sociology and research methods, joined the University in 1991 as an adjunct professor and is the former chair of the Department of Social Sciences. The Houston, Texas, native has received many honors including the Corpus Christi Alumni Association’s 2011 Distinguished Faculty Award and the Texas A&M University System Teaching Excellence Award in spring 2010. She is involved in City of Corpus Christi’s Homeless Issues Partnership and was principal investigator for the Coastal Bend’s 2010 Community Health Needs Assessment. For the 15 county Health Needs Assessment, Meyer analyzed data from hospitals, telephone surveys, and focus groups which is used to determine needed community services. University students also gained employment, networking opportunities and hands-on experience by participating in these research projects. With Dr. Jo Rios, Meyer also has been recognized for her research work with the South Texas Colonias. She also had done research for the Nueces County Diabetes Education Program housed at the Antonio Garcia Education Center and the Corpus Christi Diabetes Association. She has been awarded numerous grants including the National Institutes of Health’s VIVA grant targeting “Obesity Intervention in West Oso Independent School District” with several other University faculty. Meyer says that early intervention will have a long-lasting impact on the health of children in our community, who may be able to avoid life-threatening conditions as diabetes, heart disease and hypertension, by eating healthy and staying active. In addition, Meyer, who has published many monographs and articles in national journals, is the University’s Sociology Club co-advisor and one of the professors who taught in the “Discover Istanbul” Study Abroad Program. This fall Meyer will introduce a new course titled “Food and Society.”
