Tinara Hendrix returned to the Lone Star State in 2008 to pursue her education at the Island University. Before relocating her family to Corpus Christi, Hendrix had spent four years on a farm in Ohio. She was drawn to Corpus Christi’s cultural diversity and location on the beach. The computer science major, who is minoring in mathematics, wanted to set a prime example for her two teenagers, Shane and Shelby, by working toward a lucrative career in technology. Although the non-traditional student admits, at first, she was anxious to return to school, she said the University’s welcoming atmosphere helped her transition from life as a homemaker on a 70-acre farm to a full-time, honors student. Hendrix, whose motto is “pay it forward,” thrives on helping others. For the last two years, she has volunteered as a mentor for incoming freshmen. She has also worked in the programming assistance lab and as a grader for Phyllis Tedford. Hendrix is also a treasurer for both the Computer Science Club and the Computer Science Honors Society. Last summer, she participated in a research experience for undergraduates (REU), funded by the National Science Foundation, on marine wireless sensor networks where she worked with elliptical curve cryptography. Hendrix has also started taking guitar classes on campus. Years before coming to the Island University, Hendrix had traveled extensively through Central America and Asia, was a private English teacher in Taiwan and was a Russian linguist in the U.S. Army Reserve. She has also owned her own automotive repair business in Round Rock, Texas, and worked as an emergency dispatcher. Hendrix’s son, Shane, is attending the University Preparatory High School, while her daughter, Shelby, is earning dual credit at Flour Bluff High School. After Hendrix graduates, she wants to push for her master’s degree and find a position in Corpus Christi.
