Islander Pride
The Island University is a place where Brenda Rodriguez feels at home. The energetic student activities coordinator, who arrived in fall 2006, oversees many campus organizations including the Islander Cultural Alliance, the Panhellenic Executive Council and Excellence through Development Growth and Experience (EDGE) Leadership, and numerous events including the Homecoming Parade. She connects with students and looks for ways to develop and educate them into becoming well-rounded citizens. The Waves of Welcome chair is also on the Diversity Management Committee and the Adult Education Committee for the Art Museum of South Texas. The Mathis High School valedictorian, who moved to Corpus Christi after finishing graduate school at the University of North Texas, has a penchant for the outdoors and teaching Recreational Sports fitness classes. Her most recent adventure, Alternative Spring Break, leads students in community service projects each year. During spring break, she took 16 students to Chattahoochee River in the southern Appalachian Mountains to participate in environmental conservation. Last year, students worked on a Habitat for Humanity project in New Mexico.
