Business coordinator Esmeralda Teran has a drive for meeting the daily challenges that come with managing more than $6 million in budgets and grants for the College of Education. In November, Teran will celebrate 10 years of employment at the Island University. Teran, who was nominated for the 2010 Employee Excellence Award, wears many hats. She maintains all payroll and inventory for the College and local and state accounts, oversees budgets for the GEAR UP program and serves as center supervisor on campus for Texas Examinations of Educator Standards (TExES) Certification Testing. After arriving in 2000 as a secretary, Teran went on to hold positions as business support specialist I and II before being promoted in May to her current title. Before working on campus, Teran, a first-generation college student who is taking 15 semester hours each semester, admits that she didn’t see a college education in her future. But soon, she realized her potential to grow academically within the University’s thriving environment. In spring 2011, she will graduate with her bachelor’s degree in accounting. Next, her goals are to pass her certified research administrator (CRA) exam and pursue a master’s degree. The married mother of four has worked tirelessly to lead an example for her children. Her daughter, Cassandra, is a sophomore majoring in education at the University. Her son, Ruben, is a Navy Aircrew Search and Rescue Swimmer, who will attend the University to major in biology in 2013. And it won’t be long before her two youngest children in high school enroll at the Island University. Over the years, the family has participated in taking underprivileged children to Leakey, Texas, during the summers through the Corpus Christi Neighborhood Centers of Molina.
