Unlimited Experience
Through the years, the Island University has outfitted Sandra Arismendez with unlimited access to field experience in her own backyard and mentoring from marine biologist and ecologist, Dr. Wes Tunnell. The post doctoral research associate with the Harte Research Institute received her Ph.D. in Coastal and Marine System Science in May. Her specialty area is nutrient biogeochemistry. Arismendez, who carried a 4.0 grade point average and was selected as a commencement speaker, says she enrolled in the program because it is one of few multi-disciplinary, system science degree programs in the nation. On graduation day, her daughter, Krystal Alvarado, received her bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University and was in the audience to hear her mother speak. Arismendez, a Skidmore, Texas, native is one of nine children and was the first sibling in her family to receive a four-year degree. Arismendez also earned her Master of Science in Biology from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in 1996 and her Bachelor of Science in Biology in 1993 from Corpus Christi State University. She has conducted thesis research in Veracruz, Mexico, and was on the University’s scientific dive team that participated in research in the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea. She has worked as a natural resource coastal planner for the Corpus Christi Bay National Estuary Program and as an aquatic scientist and project manager with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. She has received many awards and scholarships, including the NOAA Environmental Cooperative Science Center Doctoral Fellowship and the A&M-Corpus Christi Association’s Young Alumni Award. Recently, she was winner of the fourth annual Graduate Student Scholarly Works Symposium. In the photo, Arismendez holds a multi-parameter water quality sonde which measures the water’s salinity, dissolved oxygen and temperature.
