Ace on the Green
Ryann White treasures memories of her grandfather Sonny Dees introducing her to golf at age 15. While at Coronado High School in Lubbock, Texas, she began golfing for the school's team and learned about Islander women's golf coach Carol Blackmar through a high school golf coach. During a visit to the Island University her senior year, White met with Blackmar, who is currently Southland Conference Coach of the Year, and was instantly attracted to the golf program and the warm campus atmosphere. The Islanders golfer and sophomore sports management major (minor in marketing) started her first semester in fall 2008. She is on the Dean's List, maintains a 3.9 grade point average and is taking 15 fall semester hours. She enjoys her kinesiology classes and is impressed by the level of care professors show to students. As for her sport, White says she's fortunate to be part of a close-knit team which continually strives for excellence. In May, the Islanders advanced to the NCAA Regionals for the first time in history after winning their first Southland Conference title. While at the NCAA West Regional in Tempe, Ariz., White carded a 242 turning in a 77 in round two. White has also traveled to Florida, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and across Texas with her team. White keeps in shape by playing a variety of outdoor sports.
