Medical Marvel
Alumnus Miranda DeBord has been preparing for the medical world since she entered the Island University four years ago. The spring 2009 graduate has seen it all from trauma to gunshot wounds by shadowing doctors in the CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Corpus Christi (Memorial and Shoreline) emergency rooms. DeBord received a degree in biomedical science and a minor in philosophy, graduated summa cum laude, scored a spot on the Dean's List, earned numerous scholarships, and was named this year's "Student Employee of the Year." This summer the Lolita, Texas, native is headed to Physician Assistant School at the Baylor College of Medicine where her interests lie in obstetrics and emergency medicine. When nominated to conduct interviews with HIV patients in South Africa through the International Scholar Laureate Program, DeBord jumped at the opportunity. Later, she set up day clinics as a student doctor in the rural areas of Panama through the Global Medical Training Program. As a physician assistant, DeBord says she'll experience what she enjoys most - more face time with patients - and she'll have the freedom to move into various specialty areas. It's no wonder she reads medical mystery novels and watches "Mystery Diagnosis" in her free time.
