A Traveling History
Alumni couple Howard and Julia Townsend will always have a special place in their hearts for the Island University. After all, this is the spot where they met - back when it was the University of Corpus Christi (UCC). They graduated from the small Baptist University of around 300 students, later married in 1955 and made their home in Houston. The couple, devoted to supporting Islander basketball, softball and volleyball games, drive more than three hours to Corpus Christi to cheer on their teams. They also anticipate socializing with friends and observing the University's progress. Howard, who played intramural sports, graduated in 1951 with a bachelor of science in accounting and was in the first four-year graduating class. Julia, who taught at the University's primary school and participated in several organizations including the State Baptist Student Union, graduated in 1954 with a bachelor of science in education. After graduating from UCC, Howard entered the Air Force. Four years later, he began working in Houston as an accountant and contact administrator. Julia, current president of the Women's Ministry Union at Houston's South Main Baptist Church, has taught school in Corpus Christi and the Deer Park school district in Houston. Two reasons the couple says they've remained connected with the campus over the years is for its friendly environment and superior people. Both have received the University's Outstanding Alumni Award and served on the National Alumni Association's board of directors. In addition, both have attended Houston Shrimp Boils and campus ceremonies and have helped recruit UCC alumni to Homecoming events. Howard, a former alumni association president, has served as Houston Club president and was a Texas A&M-Corpus Christi commencement speaker to welcome grads as alumni in 2003. Each year, their financial contributions help provide a scholarship for Houston students to attend A&M-Corpus Christi. They also support the Tarpon Foundation.
