Healthy Connections
Dr. Pamela Brouillard is concerned about the health and well-being of citizens in the community.  The professor in the Department of Psychology, who is from northern Wisconsin, came to the Island University 17 years ago. Brouillard, along with other University faculty, is involved with two National Institutes of Health informational grants. The goal of the VIVA: Improving Health through Academic-Community planning grant is to develop, through collaborative community and school engagement, interventions to reduce obesity among middle school students and their parents using culturally relevant strategies. Also, Brouillard is examining attitudes and decisions surrounding the use of herbal supplements within the Hispanic population. The advantages to the grants, she says, are the opportunities to employ students and give them a chance to participate in research. Brouillard was also nominated to the Nueces County Citizens Health Advisory Board. She has conducted studies on teaching self-breast exams to Latinas, and barriers to mental health services in South Texas. Her talks have covered cognitive changes in HIV/AIDS, healthy grieving and other topics. In addition to her focus on health-related issues, she has served as the graduate coordinator in her academic department, overseeing the program’s administrative aspects for more than five years, and is a 2004-2005 Fulbright scholar to Croatia, receiving a lecturing award at the University of Zagreb. She continues her research in Croatia and serves on the Psychology Review Committee for the Council for the International Exchange of Scholars/Fulbright Association. In May 2008, she organized travel for graduate students to present with her at the International Student Symposium on Contemporary Sexuality in Croatia. Brouillard has been published in numerous journals and has presented across the nation and in Canada, Croatia and Slovenia. She is a recipient of the University’s Outstanding Service Award, has sat on the Graduate Council and other campus committees, holds professional memberships and is a KEDT Public Radio volunteer.
