Creative Healing
Since he was a child, art has been a source of healing for alumnus and printmaker David Fuentes. The Corpus Christi native, who was born with cerebral palsy, graduated with his Master of Arts in December. His recent graduate exhibition, "This Way to Egress," melded printmaking and painting into a series of monotype prints revealing his own journey of emotional struggles, physical challenges and in the end, triumph over adversity. The former University Galleries assistant says his University professors - including Mark Anderson - gave him creative reign to evolve into his own artist. David became serious about art in high school and earned his BFA in painting from the University in 2005. But it wasn't until he enrolled in the graduate program that he grew a passion for printmaking. David, who received the 2007 National Acquisitions Exhibition for Artists with Disabilities "Juror's Choice Award," has been featured in newspaper and magazine articles. He's currently applying for MFA programs in the Midwest.
