Leading the Way
As a campus leader at the Island University, Victoria Saucedo hopes she has impacted the lives of other students. The Austin, Texas, native who spent vacations in Corpus Christi with her family had her mind set on returning to earn her health science degree and enjoy the beach. Saucedo, who graduates in May 2011 and aspires to work in a hospital, is also earning a minor in human resource management. Her interest in the field was sparked by her mother, Mary, a human resources professional. In fall 2008 Saucedo became a member of the Multi-Cultural Greek Council (MCGC), and was elected in spring 2010 to serve as its first Council president, where she has assisted in the first MGC Week, participated in a number of student events including Greek Week and the annual MGC Step and Stroll Showcase. Saucedo is a member of AmeriCorps through the Title V Department’s GO Centers where she has assisted high school students at Flour Bluff High School in their college readiness by helping them complete their (FAFSA) Free Application for Federal Student Aid forms and other paperwork. She believes in providing high school students with the educational tools they need in advance to enhance their career path. Within nine months, Saucedo totaled 650 hours with AmeriCorps. Her community service began in high school as she gave her time to toy drives, highway cleanups and volunteering at the Austin Area Food Bank. Now, she has worked on recent projects including painting houses for Habitat for Humanity, collecting money throughout the city for AmeriCorps Haiti Relief Drive and serving as a Relay for Life team captain for Lambda Theta Alpha. Saucedo, a former Lambda Theta Alpha president who is the sorority’s chapter orientation advisor, says she has been afforded numerous opportunities to make a difference at and beyond the Island University.
