Persuasive Communication
Meagan Bryand has given back to her alma mater by staying connected to the Island University and contributing to the success of its programs. The native of Houston, Texas, earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communication in 2009 from the Island University, where she was a McNair Scholar and a Title V “Completing the Pipeline” college mentor. Currently, she is an intervention specialist with Title-V undergraduate Programs at College Outreach and Access for Successful Transition (COAST) and maintains a 4.0 grade point average while pursuing her Master of Arts in Communication Studies. As an intervention specialist, Bryand supervises hiring and training for Title V’s Supplemental Instruction for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) students and maintains retention reports. Recently, she earned first place for her oral presentation titled “Saving Face: Face Concerns, Facework, and Self-Construal Differences among Hispanics and Caucasians” at the eighth annual Texas A&M University System Pathways Student Research Symposium. She was chosen from among 52 students across Texas in the social science humanities division. Bryand, a member of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s ELITE cohort, is interested in instructional communication. During her time on campus, she has been involved with many projects. She will be a teaching assistant for Dr. Virginia Wheeless’ “Techniques of Persuasion” class, and for one of her independent studies, she was a research assistant for Dr. Shawn Wahl’s forthcoming book “Persuasion in Your Life.” In addition, she has presented research at professional meetings and teamed up with communication faculty for a manuscript to be published in Communication Education. Bryand, who has participated in several community outreach activities, is a member of the Lambda Pi Eta communication honor society and the National Communication Association. Her long-term plans are to earn a Ph.D. and teach.
