Far-Reaching Ambition
International student Nhung “Lua” Hoang is confident that her campus involvement, leadership positions and internships will serve her well when it’s time to return home to Haiphong, Vietnam, and find a finance position. Since she was a child, the sophomore, who is on the Dean’s List, has dreamed of studying abroad. She chose the Island University because it’s a part of the reputable Texas A&M University System and after receiving scholarships, the remainder of her tuition and fees were affordable. She began studying English at age 8 and continued learning the language at Vietnam’s National Economic University. The first time Hoang left Vietnam was when she came to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in January 2008 with luggage in hand. Hoang says the University’s top-rated professors and friendly campus have contributed to her academic success. She has served as Vietnamese Student Association treasurer; Student Finance Association events coordinator; and a member of the Accounting Society Association. In addition, she serves as the UCSO representative for the International Student Association and was vice president of special projects for her Macroeconomics Principle Honors Class Community Engagement Project. This summer, she interned at a securities company in Hanoi, Vietnam. Hoang is an undergraduate research assistant for the Department of Physical and Environmental Sciences. She has received ESLI’s “The Most Ambitious Student” Award and many other honors. Hoang, whose parents are doctors, has a twin sister attending medical school in Vietnam. Hoang enjoys sharing her culture, which includes details on the popularity of water puppets, which she holds in the photograph.
