Grateful for Greek Life

Kristen Garza says that her parents encouraged her at a young age to help people in need. This inspired Garza, who is a health science and nursing double major, to take an active role in the community to help make the world a better place.

Her commitment to lead by example on campus and provide leadership throughout student organizations has earned her the recognition of the 2013 Greek Woman of the Year.

“Being a part of Greek life has really brought me out of my shell and made me more aware of what’s going on within our community,” said Garza. “It has helped me become more social and responsible.”

Garza’s advisors say she lives true to her values and sets an example for new members to follow. She has dedicated her time and effort to the Sigma Lambda Gamma sorority through various leadership roles including Vice President, Recruitment Chairwoman, and Member Educator. She also serves as Vice President of Special Events for the Multicultural Greek Council. She does all this while maintaining top grades and participating in various community service projects.

Her favorite community service organization to volunteer for is the Mother Teresa Homeless Shelter.

“It really opened my eyes to truly appreciate what I have and how far I’ve been able to go in my life,” said Garza.

“Volunteering showed me not to take things for granted and to live life to the fullest.”

Recently, Garza was appointed President of the Multicultural Greek Council (MGC). She has assisted the MGC by serving in multiple leadership roles and as a representative supporting many events and functions. She hopes to utilize her new office to plan more events that will help spread a good light and reputation for Greeks within the Coastal Bend community.

“Being a part of Sigma Lambda Gamma has not only made me a strong woman, but it has taught me so much about myself and life,” said Garza. “For that, I will always be grateful and take pride in being part of such an amazing organization.”
