Innovating Medical Education
A seasoned higher-education innovator, Dr. Claudia McDonald believes looming changes in medical education and practice demand creative technological responses grounded in sound research. As associate vice president for special projects, she oversees the University's Center for Virtual Medical Education, a leader in research and development of sophisticated learning platforms utilizing cutting-edge video-game technology. In 2004, Dr. McDonald conceived Pulse!! The Virtual Clinical Learning Lab, the center's signature project, which since March 2005 has received more than $14 million in congressional funding through the Office of Naval Research. A prolific writer and presenter at academic, industry and government conferences, McDonald gave a keynote address for the American College of Surgeons' 2007 "Summit on the Use of Simulation in Continuing Education in Surgery." Her current service activities include the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board's advisory committee for distance education and doctoral education and the board of the South Texas Public Broadcasting System.
