The Right Fit
Although there are more than 500 kinesiology majors at the Island University, Liz Perez wants to know every name and face. To her, no one is just a number. The administrative assistant for Kinesiology says her focus is to make the job of Department Chair Randy Bonnette a little easier by ensuring daily operations run smoothly. Every day, she answers phones, schedules faculty appointments, keeps track of faculty deadlines and priorities, prepares employee payroll action forms, and purchases supplies and equipment. Perez, who celebrates 10 years at the University in October, received the 2003-2004 Employee Excellence Award. In May, Perez and the Department of Kinesiology moved to their new home in Island Hall. Perez is one of a handful of employees across campus who completed the Certified Professional Secretary (CPS) pilot education program sponsored by the Employee Relations Office. In addition to being a key player on the job, she volunteers her remaining energy with many University projects. For several years, she has pitched in at the annual Faculty/Staff Barbecue; served lunch at the “State of the University” luncheon, and worked as a workshop assistant for Employee Relations, Training & Development’s annual “Development Day.” She also lends a hand with the annual Administrative Professionals Luncheons, performs as team leader with the annual faculty/staff campaign and the State Employee Charitable campaign (SECC) and works commencement ceremonies. Perez sees each day as a new adventure, where she can meet many friends along the way. Her youngest son, Alexander, is currently majoring in math at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
