Sports Centered
Even as a kid growing up in Lake Charles, La., Joshua Brown was already a mega sports fan. He remembers taking any chance he could to be right in the middle of the action. He helped in many ways – including ball boy – at McNeese State University sports games while his mother, Penny, worked with the Athletics Department, and he played high school football. Fast forward and Brown is assistant director of Athletic Media Relations at the Island University. He first visited the campus as a McNeese student in 2007 for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s Southland Conference victory in men’s basketball. While Brown was at the Island University, he discovered a welcoming environment. In September, Brown will celebrate his two-year anniversary at the campus. Initially, he was drawn to the sports information position and the fact that the school was part of the Southland Conference. In his daily duties, Brown drums up attention for the latest Islander news; updates content on GoIslanders.com and related FaceBook and Twitter pages; prepares feature stories and news releases and stats to send to the media; and helps facilitate interviews with athletes. During the season, Brown travels with women’s basketball and softball teams to their games across the country. In May, Brown was honored with the Staff Courage and Character Award at the Student Athlete Banquet. In addition, he was hand-picked by Athletic Director Timothy Fitzpatrick to be part of the Mayor’s Fitness Council 12-week V-Fit Challenge program. After Brown, who weighed 440 pounds less than two years ago, was diagnosed with congestive heart failure in December 2008, he decided to change his fate by eating right and keeping active. So far, Brown has lost 207 pounds and is only 13 pounds away from his goal weight of 220. Brown is an inspiration to many across campus and in the community.
