Nursing's Bright Future
Since Laura Villalobos was a child, she's always had a tremendous respect for nurses. During the summers while attending Gregory-Portland High School, she volunteered at CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Corpus Christi-Shoreline shadowing nurses and helping out in the emergency room and the pharmacy. Now, the junior with a 3.86 grade point average will enter the nursing program this fall. Currently, she is working with Dr. Lillian S. Waldbeser for her McNair Scholars research project titled "Contribution of Stress Hormone to the Pathogenicity of Neisseria meningitides" concentrating in microbiology and immunology and investigating the relationship between stress and bacterial virulence. Through this research experience, Villalobos, who is minoring in Spanish, earned a $2,800 summer stipend for her 100 hour-plus project. In addition, she's received half a dozen scholarships to help pay for her school including the Honors Program Scholarship, the Community Outreach Scholarship, and the Wright Family Scholarship Fund. The Island Ambassador is on the Dean's List, is a member of the Honors Student Association, has served as a representative for the College, and has participated in the Honors Mentoring Program where she assisted other students in hosting welcoming events for incoming freshmen. Recently, she brought her sister, Emmylou, 16, to the University to tour the campus. Now Emmylou plans to study on the Island and pursue a degree in the health field.
