Dr. Michelle Maresh attributes many of her accomplishments to the mentoring she received as a student at the Island University. The graduate of Corpus Christi’s Miller High School, who received her Bachelor of Arts in Communication in 2004 (summa cum laude) from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, returned to the campus in August 2009 as an assistant professor of communication and was honored with the Texas A&M System Teaching Excellence Award that fall.  Before accepting the position, Maresh earned a master’s degree from Texas Tech and her Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. This year Maresh became family network coordinator for the McNair Scholars Program, where she speaks with the scholars’ families, helping them find ways to support their scholar before and during graduate school, and remains in contact with students after they leave. Her specialty areas are crisis communication with a focus on the oil industry, public relations and instructional communication. This fall she will teach a new crisis communication course. She is also responsible for obtaining a grant from the Texas Research Development Fund to conduct research pertaining to student-teacher communication in the online classroom and its effects on student learning, motivation and retention. In April 2011 she took communication graduate students to the Central States Communication Association conference in Milwaukee, Wis. Currently, she is advisor for both Lambda Pi Eta and the COMM Club and an Island Days volunteer. In addition, she is the board secretary for the Rotary Club of Southside Corpus Christi, a member of the Hispanic Women’s Network of Texas-Corpus Christi Chapter. Maresh has been published in numerous journals. She believes that the students who attend the Island University truly appreciate their college opportunities, work hard to maintain top grades and get involved with University. She encourages students to seize academic opportunities, find a faculty mentor and dream big.
