An Accomplished Optimist
When international student Togrul Quliyev arrived at the Island University in fall 2005, he faced the challenges of starting a new life away from friends and family and having to become fluent in English. But in less than four years, Quliyev, who is from Azerbaijan, has set a shining example of academic excellence. The junior majoring in finance credits constant optimism and self-motivation for his many accomplishments. The Student Finance Association president holds a 3.9 grade point average, serves as Student Government Association business senator and a President's Ambassador, is in the University's Honors Program and is on the Dean's List. He also made the National Dean's List in fall 2006. In the community, Quliyev works as a financial advisor assistant. Quliyev is grateful for the assistance he has received through the English as a Second Language International office. He is giving back to the University as a peer mentor through the Together Islanders Develop Excellence (TIDE) program that helps new students transition into college life. Through the University's Study Abroad Program, overseen by the Office of International Education, Togrul studied in Salamanca, Spain, in June 2008.
