The College of Business provides Dr. Valrie Chambers with a supportive environment conducive to research and faculty collaboration. The associate professor of accounting, who arrived at the Island University in fall 2000, is developing the new Maymester Accounting Considerations for Small Businesses course, the first offered in the nation. In addition, Chambers has collaborated on projects with many including Drs. Marilyn Spencer, Patrick Crowley and Bilaye Benibo. Chambers, who serves as the University's liaison for the Volunteer Income Tax Program (VITA), was one of 15 in the nation selected for the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants' IRS Practice and Procedures Committee and is the University's financial accounting and reporting simulation pre-test coordinator. The Pittsburgh native and Steelers fan is organizer of the bi-annual Financial "Who-dun-it," and has received numerous honors including the Most Collegial Business Faculty Award, the Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Council Outstanding Faculty Advisor Award and community service recognition for support and outstanding contribution to the 2008 VITA program. Her research with Spencer on tax refund spending was recently featured in "The New Yorker" and "New Scientist" magazines.
