CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – More than 140 participants enjoyed the sounds of the Department of Music during the second annual Musical Miles 5K Run/Walk held March 8 at Cole Park in Corpus Christi.
Coastal Bend residents started off their morning enjoying the downtown scenery, listening to students perform a variety of instruments, and supporting the Department of Music.
“I saw this event on the website and I thought it was a great idea and a good first 5k for me,” said Monica Kingsbury, who is an employee for Student Activities on campus. “I really thought it was important to support the music department at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.”
Island University groups who performed at the event included the Percussion Ensemble, a trombone quartet, a reggae band, and a steel drum band.
“We have bands in the amphitheater and on the course while you are running,” said Dr. Mary Thornton, Associate Professor of Music. “Runners have the chance to really see what the students are doing for fun. We would like to continue doing this every year.”
Thornton thanks everyone who came out to the event, which is the number one fundraiser for music student scholarships. Musical Miles raised $2,686.50 to benefit the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Department of Music Scholarship Fund.Musical Miles T-shirts are still available for $10 each.
