Island University Ranked as a ‘Top College’ for Teacher Education

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas –Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi has been recognized as a top college for teacher education by the Online Colleges Database.

The new ranking, “Top Colleges in Texas Shaping the Next Generation,” honors the post-secondary institutions in the state that graduated the most education and teaching professionals in 2012. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, which awarded 238 teacher education degrees in 2012, came in at No. 19 on the list of 67 education programs at universities across the state.

“We’re proud to be recognized for our commitment to teacher education,” said Dr. Flavius Killebrew, President and CEO of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. “This is a testament to the University’s important role in filling the demand for highly-skilled educators in our schools across the state.”   

With its nationally-recognized professors and programs, the Department of Teacher Education helps prepare future teachers in all subject areas for TExES certification and offers pathways for certifications in areas of School Counselor, Principal, Educational Diagnostician, Superintendent, and Reading Specialist. The University offers undergraduate majors and minors in Teacher Education; and master’s programs in Early Childhood Education, Educational Technology, Elementary Education, Secondary Education, and Special Education. A Master’s and Certification program and an Alternative Certification program are also available as pathways to teaching certification.  

“We’re providing our teachers with innovative programs designed for today’s classroom that highlight key areas of curriculum, technology, and special education,” said Dr. Arthur Hernandez, Dean of the College of Education. “This helps to ensure that our teachers are ready to face educational challenges.”

The College Database identified the top colleges through methodology that included four-year, fully-accredited, public, private, and not-for-profit colleges and universities in the United States that had a minimum of 10 graduates from education or teaching programs in 2012.

The College Database, a not-for-profit organization, provides free information about education options both nationally and locally to students, parents, and other interested parties. The goal is accomplished by making all information and tools on the website free and easy to access. The College Database has become a leader in providing educational information to libraries, high schools, and career centers across the country.
