CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas- Students preparing for final exams had the opportunity to relax and play with therapy dogs to help reduce stress and anxiety at the “Paws on the Island” event on Tuesday, Dec. 10, in the University Center, Tejas Room 106A. Some of the dogs at the event were Frankie the corgi, Ozzie the Labrador retriever, Lucy the dachshund, and Angel the schnauzer.

“Students are studying for upcoming exams and ‘Paws on the Island’ is a way for them to relieve stress, reduce anxiety, and lower blood pressure,” said Jennifer Anderson, Marketing and Communication Librarian. “This also helps students get a sense of that ‘home’ comfort that they may be missing from their own pets that they are not able to take to college with them.”

The Mary and Bell Library and Paws Up Inc. have partnered together for a third semester to bring this stress-relieving environment to the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi campus. Recreational Sports and the University Counseling Center were also there at the Engineering Plaza with fun and games for the campus.

This event was put into place to help students cope and give them a relaxing distraction during final exam week. During the event, students were able to interact with pets through petting and playing.  Volunteers also allowed students to snap photos with the dogs.

“This is a fun way to relieve the stress of finals,” said sophomore, Alicia Thomsen. “I’m glad that the University offers stress-reducing events like this for the students to partake in.”

Paws Up Inc. is a non-profit organization that provides animal assisted therapy in the Corpus Christi area.  During the event, information was also available about University Counseling Center services.
