CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas—Undergraduate students pursuing study in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields and new graduate students now have new opportunities to receive scholarships at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.

The University has designated an additional $800,000 for undergraduate STEM scholarships and new graduate studies scholarships.  Each scholarship award is estimated at about $1,000 for the Summer 2014, Fall 2014, and Spring 2015 semesters.

“Earning a university degree is an investment in the future,” said Dr. Flavius Killebrew, President/CEO of Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. “We are proud to be able to offer our deserving students the help they need to receive the type of quality education that will make that future a bright one.”

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi normally awards $2 million in scholarships to deserving students.  Every year the University awards more than 2,000 scholarships to students in every field of study, including Fine Arts, Marine Biology, and Nursing.  In fact, 82 percent of Island University students receive some sort of scholarship or financial aid.  Valerie Ferdin, who received her undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering this year, was one of those recipients.  Ferdin is a first generation college student, and says getting a scholarship to attend A&M-Corpus Christi put her on the path to success.

“If I did not receive any type of scholarship, I probably would not have chosen Engineering as my major,” said Ferdin.  “I probably would have just gone to the military to be honest.”

Another scholarship recipient says he would encourage everyone to apply.  Kyle Rylance, who is also a Mechanical Engineering major, says getting a scholarship was easier than he thought it would be.

“There are plenty of scholarships available,” said Rylance.  “You should apply as soon as possible, so that you get this opportunity.”
