CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Approximately 527 students, representing Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi’s five colleges, received their diplomas during the summer 2013 commencement ceremony on Saturday, Aug. 10, at 10 a.m. in the American Bank Center arena.

The graduates included the first students to graduate from the College of Nursing and Health Sciences’ one-of-a-kind eLine Military (ELM) program, which puts veterans on a fast-track to a nursing career in the civilian world.  This program, which is recognized by the White House, gives college credit to military veterans for their medical experience in the service.     The first three ELM graduates are Irene Singles, an Air Force veteran who began the program while stationed in Colorado; Randy Ramirez, who is currently serving in the Navy; and Nathan Parks, an Army veteran who lives near Dallas.

In addition, a mother and daughter who both had to overcome challenging obstacles to earn their degrees graduated during the ceremony.  The mother, Judith Denise Gonzalez Rodriguez, received her bachelor’s degree in education.  Rodriguez always wanted to return to school, but waited until she had raised her children to do so.   She graduated with one of those children, daughter, Virginia Rodriguez.

The keynote speaker for summer commencement ceremonies was State Representative Abel Herrero who told graduates that they need to be ready to answer when opportunity knocks.
