Team Killer Whale Wins Overall Competition at University STEM Camp

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Student teams from high schools around the nation participated in an ROV (remotely operated vehicle) underwater robotics and navigation contest held Saturday, July13, at the Moody Sustainers Field House Pool at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.

The competition, which focused on the construction and knowledge of innovative technology to improve ROV’s navigation, was part of the College of Science and Engineering’s second “STEM Summer Institute: Underwater Robotics” educational program held July 7-13.

During an awards ceremony held Saturday afternoon, the Killer Whales were awarded first prize for the highest average score in all competitions. The team had the best design and completed the event in the fastest time. Each member received an iPad and trophy.

The winners with the highest average score in all competitions were:

  • Wayne Carpenter, Bishop Machebeuff High School in Denver, Colo.
  • Mason Montgomery, Memorial High School in Houston, Texas
  • Sterling Garrett, Canyon Lake High School in Canyon Lake, Texas
  • Antonio Chapa, Samuel Clemens High School in Schertz, Texas

Teams made up of three-to-five students designed and manufactured several student-made ROV attachments, which were used on an official ROV machine in the pool to fetch items underwater during a competition at the end of camp.  Students who participated in the week long residential camp built a solid foundation in college-level math, science, technology, and ROV assembly.
