Free Emissions Testing Event Helps You Save on Gas, Improves Air Quality

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Pollution Prevention Partnership (P3) at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi and the Port of Corpus Christi provided a Vehicle Emissions Testing Event on Wednesday, June 12, in the Whataburger Field parking lot. At the event, nearly 150 vehicles were tested and 60 drivers received vouchers for free repairs and gas caps.

The benefits of the testing event to the community over the summer months will help residents save on gasoline costs and improve the city’s air quality on Ozone Action Days.

“This program is a benefit to everyone,” said Chris Cisneros-Guzman, Program Manager of the P3. “For the public, these tests provide a way to make sure their cars are running clean. Clean cars are more gas efficient and that saves money. Keeping our community in attainment should be a priority for all of us and this is a great way we can all help!”

The testing took less than three minutes. Vehicles that were identified as polluting qualified for a voucher to help pay for the repairs. Organizers say that having your vehicle checked regularly can help the city avoid the need for Ozone Action days.

Ozone Action days are usually called when the AQI gets into the unhealthy ranges. It is recommended that during these days, the groups that are sensitive to the pollutant should reduce exposure by reducing prolonged or heavy exertion outdoors.

The Pollution Prevention Partnership started in 1995 to address air quality issues in Corpus Christi, an ozone near-nonattainment area. The P3 delivers a broad range of environmental assistance programs and services including environmental education, pollution prevention, and environmental compliance assistance to citizens, schools, businesses, industry, and governments throughout the Coastal Bend.

The P3 will host its next event on Thursday, June 20, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Old City Hall Park near Sherrill Park in downtown Corpus Christi. For more information, go to http://autocheck.tamucc.edu/.
